Who’s In Charge? One Man’s Opinion
When I grew up in Chicago, it was a melting pot of immigration. Each neighborhood was ethnic: Polish, Italian, Irish, you name it. Most of my friends’ parents or grandparents came to America looking for a better life. They were tough, worked hard and their family unit was close.
Just how tough? In grade school, I got into a shouting match and screamed, “Whatta you going to do about it?” In a flash, a clenched fist popped me in the nose, blood everywhere and I was on the floor crying while kids were laughing. My opponent – Josephene, an Italian girl in a dress with beautiful ringlet curls. Nobody ever gave her any crap again.
Recently, my ENT told me the reason I had trouble breathing was that my nose had some damage. I mused, “Thank you, Josephine, wherever you are!”
I look back on those years fondly. Many of the immigrants were factory workers, laborers working long hours at tough jobs. They bought 3-story apartment buildings, living in the basement and renting out the upper floors. Their children got a good education, worked hard and moved out to the suburbs and proudly sent their children to college.
They all wanted to live the American Dream, assimilate into our society and way of life. They came here legally, learned our language and asked for nothing but an opportunity. Our country thrived; everybody wins.
The New Colossus
Wikipedia tells us:
“‘The New Colossus‘ is a sonnet by American poet Emma Lazarus (1849–1887). She wrote the poem in 1883 to raise money for the construction of a pedestal for the Statue of Liberty.
‘Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

Wikipedia adds:
“John T. Cunningham wrote, “The Statue of Liberty was not conceived and sculpted as a symbol of immigration, but it quickly became so as immigrant ships passed under the torch and the shining face, heading toward Ellis Island.'”
Free???
I was with Casey Research when Obamacare passed. I interviewed several medical and legal experts. They unanimously concluded the bill contained provisions to restrict health care for those “of no value to society.” (Under 7 and over 75)
My wife and I went to International Living conferences, investigating what living abroad and international health care options would be available should those fears come to pass.
While the bronze plaque may say, “Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” that was it – free air! At the time, no other country in the world wanted immigrants who couldn’t support themselves and become dependent on their government health care system.
The president of the John-Hopkins facility in Panama explained they were gearing up, anticipating a flood of US patients who could no longer get care in the US. Their rules – cash or insurance money in advance – period! Taxpayers, overburdened with social programs, didn’t want non-citizens getting free stuff.

Non-citizens had no say-so in how things were run. If you were lucky, you would be approved and welcomed. |
Things Changed
Historically, our immigration laws have served us well; however, almost overnight, we were swamped with millions flooding into this country illegally. When the government attempted to stem the tide, they were fought tooth and nail; sanctuary locations welcomed illegals, flaunting federal immigration laws.
The news was full of reports of illegals given free passage to the US. Upon arrival, they got free food, housing, medical, phones, you name it. There was no legitimate processing; many terrorists and hardened criminals came into the US without vetting.
Foreign leaders saw this and quickly emptied out their jails, sending them to the US. One clever friend said they were jailbirds; “yearning to breathe free.”
Europe is also being flooded with immigrants. The Hoover Institute reports:
“In the past decade twenty-nine million immigrants, both legal and illegal, arrived in Europe, straining the Continent’s already overstretched and largely dysfunctional immigration system.
…. As a result of the mass inflow of people into Europe, immigration has emerged as arguably the defining driver of European politics today. Concerns about crime rates and public safety,…have fueled public discontent…with the latest riots in the United Kingdom but the most recent manifestation of the political pressure building across the Continent.
…. The migration crisis is likely to continue to drive a wedge between Europe’s policy elites and the increasingly disaffected and restive publics…. Terrorist attacks in Europe by Islamist extremists,…have contributed to mistrust and public anger.”
Citizens everywhere are feeling the effects of unvetted immigration while their government is unable/unwilling to protect them. The elite and media turn a blind eye, riots are called peaceful protests, while citizens are prosecuted for speaking out. The pot is beginning to boil.
Historically, immigrants came to the US to become part of the American Dream and assimilate into our culture – Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet, kind of thing. That is changing. Several thousand Somali immigrants were relocated to Minnesota. They don’t want to assimilate; they want to change our society – with some advocating implementing Sharia Law.
Europeans are unique. Most countries are about the same size as some US states. Each has their own language, culture, values and heritage dating back hundreds of years. It has worked well and their people are proud of their differences. I asked a French man why things were so expensive. He grinned, “Monsieur, it is a luxury to be French!”
Many European countries rejected the EU immigration flood and have protected their heritage. Many who didn’t are not only seeing crime, but also their entire culture coming under attack. Temperatures are rising.

Meanwhile back in the US
Most Americans don’t understand why any jurisdiction would become a sanctuary location. They shield illegals from federal authorities, regularly releasing criminals back into their community, while it is bankrupting their taxpayers. Many citizens are fleeing these areas, moving elsewhere where they feel safe.
It can be fixed
Senator Pete Ricketts explains:
“In the last year, President Biden has allowed 1.2 million illegal aliens into our country through parole. …. It’s killing our young people by allowing fentanyl to pour into our communities. It’s risking our national security as border encounters with known terrorists soar. It’s also going to have major ramifications on our elections.
Right now, illegal immigrants are counted in the Census. That data is used to decide how many congressional districts and Electoral College votes a state gets. The Electoral College is how we elect the president. The number of congressional seats can impact which Party controls the House of Representatives. The data is also used for the formula that determines where federal dollars get spent across the country.
By counting illegal immigrants in the Census, we’re rewarding cities and states that break our immigration laws. …. Democrats openly admit they are rigging the system. Earlier this year,…Rep. Yvette Clarke, a Democrat from New York, blatantly called for more illegal immigration to her district. She said she needed more people for ‘redistricting purposes.’
The Census policy must change. Only U.S. citizens can vote in federal elections. So it is only right to count citizens in deciding how these Congressional seats, Electoral College votes, and federal funds get divided.”
The Real Issue
The pot is boiling. This is not a Republican/Democrat issue; the vast majority of Americans see what is happening, want illegal immigration stopped, and most sent back where they came from.
Flooding the system with illegals, counting them in the census, using that data for representation, electoral college and federal money rewards those who disregard the law and punish citizens who are paying the bill.
The battle is over who’s in charge. Do citizens have the right to control who they allow in? Should non-citizens have a major influence in how we run our country? Politicos are using immigration to enhance their personal quest for power and control. Remove the financial and political incentive and we will see just how humanitarian they really are.
Every country in the world has their own unique culture. If you wish to migrate there, immigrants should adapt to their world.
Our immigration laws have worked well and our culture has changed over time – legally – and it must continue that way.

On The Lighter Side…
Jo continues to rehab as she recovers from her rotator cuff surgery, while I pitch in with household chores. This week was a learning experience.
Did you know that playing “capture the cat” to go to the vet for shots qualifies as hazardous duty? Someone should invent a shirt with the same material as an oven mitt for proper protection.
Mike Rowe should bring his camera crew from Dirty Jobs to film cleaning up a fur ball after you stepped in it. I thought I caught Jo stifling a laugh when it happened, but it’s probably my imagination….
Had a nice treat this week when subscriber Mike F. invited me to lunch. He’s an Indiana guy through and through. Like most of us, we are just trying to stay one step ahead of things through our golden years.
